An evening at home with the Bird (One Night in Chicago)

  • I was 16 and on drugs (I'd just takjen a huge overdose of speed) when I bought this LP about 40 years ago. I couldn't get it out of my head during the months it took me to calm down. I've never heard any oither charlie parker (or much else) that matches the intensity of "There's a Small Hotel" - maybe Mahler's 10th. or Ravi Shankar's Raga Charu Keshi (I discovered the latter that same weekend). or Beethoven's Missa Solemnis conducted by Toscanini. But that's about it.
